Setup: the two-anchor rule

Nearly every ruined spirograph comes from one of two things moving: the paper or the ring. Anchor both. Tape smooth, medium-weight paper (standard printer paper is fine; glossy paper is not) to a hard surface at all four corners — a clipboard or a sheet of stiff cardboard makes a good portable base. Then fix the ring to the paper with reusable adhesive putty pressed under three or four points of its edge. Sets that come with pins can use those instead, but putty holds better on a desk and leaves no holes.

Choosing a pen

The classic mistake is a fat pen pressed hard. You want the opposite: a fine tip and a light touch. Fine-point ballpoints and 0.4–0.7 mm gel pens are ideal — they flow at low pressure and fit the wheel holes cleanly. Fine-liner felt pens work beautifully for color but wear out faster on long patterns. Standard pencils technically fit but smear under the wheel as it passes back over finished lines; if you want pencil, use a hard lead (2H) and accept lighter lines. Whatever the pen, keep it vertical — a tilted pen drags the wheel off its teeth.

The drawing motion

Don't grip the wheel — drive it with the pen. Gentle downward-and-sideways pressure on the pen makes the wheel roll along the ring's teeth; your other hand just steadies the ring. Go slower than feels necessary, especially through the tight inner curves where the wheel wants to skip. How long do you keep going? Until the line meets its own start — and the math tells you exactly when. A pattern closes after lcm(ring, wheel) ÷ ring trips around the ring: ring 96 with wheel 60 closes in just 5 rotations, while ring 105 with wheel 64 takes 64. Check the rotation count in the visualizer's info panel before you start, so you know whether you've signed up for a sprint or a marathon.

Best first patterns

Start with combinations that close in under ten rotations and still look impressive. Ring 96 / wheel 36 (8 petals, 3 rotations) is the classic first star. Ring 105 / wheel 30 gives a bold 7-petal flower in 2 rotations, and ring 150 / wheel 40 a 15-petal bloom in 4. When those feel easy, graduate to the 32-petal 96/45 — 15 rotations of steady hands, and the pattern this whole site uses as its signature. The combination reference sorts all 72 pairings by petal count and rotations so you can pick your own difficulty curve.

Know your Deluxe set

The current Spirograph Deluxe set (the Kahootz/PlayMonster edition of the original) includes four rings — 96, 105, 144, and 150 teeth — and eighteen wheels from 24 up to 84 teeth, each with its tooth count printed on the piece. Every one of those gears is modeled digitally on this site with the same numbers: the reference table shows what all 72 ring-and-wheel pairings draw, and each ring has its own character — 96 makes evenly-divisible rosettes, 105 is the only ring whose patterns always have an odd number of petals, 144 owns the nine-fold symmetries, and 150 specializes in fives. If a physical pattern pleases you, find its numbers in the table and it will reproduce exactly in the visualizer — and vice versa: the visualizer's pen-position control shows the approximate hole number to use on the real wheel.

Layering colors

The signature spirograph look is several patterns sharing one center. Finish a pattern, swap pens, and either change wheels (different petal count, same center) or re-mesh the same wheel a few teeth over (same pattern, rotated). Three layers is the sweet spot before dense areas turn muddy.
