How to Read This Chart
Petals is the number of lobes or points in the finished pattern. It equals lcm(ring, wheel) ÷ wheel. A ring-96 / wheel-45 combination gives lcm(96,45)=1440, so 1440÷45 = 32 petals.
Rotations tells you how many times the wheel travels around the inside of the ring before the pen returns to its starting point. The pattern is complete after this many laps: lcm(ring, wheel) ÷ ring.
Gear ratio is the ring and wheel tooth counts expressed as a simplified fraction. 96/45 simplifies to 32/15 because gcd(96,45)=3. Combinations with a ratio of N/1 produce exactly N petals in a single rotation — the simplest patterns.
Complexity tip: combinations with more rotations and more petals take longer to draw and produce denser, more intricate patterns. Start with low-petal combinations (under 10) for clean, simple results.
