Can't find the tooth count printed on a wheel? Count the teeth around its outer edge, or check the combinations reference — the standard wheel sizes are 24, 30, 32, 36, 40, 42, 45, 48, 50, 52, 56, 60, 63, 64, 72, 75, 80, and 84 teeth.

Drawing Your First Pattern

Secure the ring

Place your ring on a firm surface covered with paper. Use adhesive putty pressed around the outside edge, or push pins through the pin holes if your ring has them. Any wobble in the ring will cause a broken or doubled line — secure it firmly.

Choose and place the wheel

For your very first pattern, try the Ring 96 / Wheel 60 combination — it gives 8 petals in 5 rotations, quick to complete with a satisfying result. Mesh the wheel's outer teeth against the ring's inner teeth at the top of the ring.

Pick a pen hole

Wheels have several holes at different distances from the center. Start near the edge (about 75% of the way from center to edge) for the classic spirograph look. Holes closer to the center give rounder, more circle-like patterns.

Draw slowly and steadily

Rest the pen lightly in the hole and apply gentle downward pressure. Rotate the wheel smoothly around the ring's interior — too fast and the wheel may jump out of the teeth. Keep going until the pen returns to its starting point.

Lift and admire

Remove the wheel and ring without smearing the ink. Use a fineliner or gel pen for the cleanest lines — ballpoint pens can skip or blob. Let ink dry before removing the ring.

Tips for Better Results

Paper matters

Use smooth, heavyweight paper (90–120gsm). Thin paper flexes under the gear, causing wobbles. Cartridge paper or Bristol board gives the cleanest lines.

Pen choice

Best: Fine-tipped pens (0.3–0.5mm) or gel pens in vibrant colors. Avoid: Thick felt tips that drag, or scratchy ballpoints that skip. Micron or Staedtler pens work especially well.

Fixing the wheel mid-draw

If the wheel slips out of the teeth, mark the pen hole position and the point on the ring where the wheel was sitting, then carefully re-engage the teeth and continue. With practice you'll develop a feel for the right pressure.

Multi-color layering

Once you have one pattern, don't move the ring. Switch to a second wheel and a different colour pen, draw another pattern on top. The overlapping curves create depth and complexity that neither layer has alone. Use the visualizer's layer feature to plan colour combinations before committing to paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common causes are: (1) the ring shifted mid-draw — use more putty next time; (2) you used a different pen hole — holes closer to the center give rounder patterns; (3) the wheel jumped a tooth somewhere, causing a small discontinuity. The visualizer shows you exactly what each hole produces before you draw.
The number of rotations is lcm(ring, wheel) / ring. For ring 96 / wheel 60, that's lcm(96,60)/96 = 480/96 = 5 rotations. You'll know you're done when the line returns exactly to the starting point. The info panel in the visualizer shows this count for every combination.
Absolutely — this is how you create layered designs. Keep the ring fixed, complete one wheel's pattern, switch wheels and colours, draw again. The patterns will share the same center point, which creates the harmonious overlap characteristic of spirograph art.
When the line refuses to meet its starting point, the wheel almost certainly skipped a tooth — usually from pressing too hard on the pen or rotating too fast through the tight part of the curve. Restart with lighter pen pressure and slower, steadier rotation, and check the expected rotation count in the visualizer's info panel first so you know how many laps a clean finish takes. A pattern that's complete but rotated from where you expected just means the wheel was meshed at a different starting tooth — which changes nothing about the shape.
Anchor everything twice: tape the paper to a hard surface (a clipboard or cardboard sheet works well) at all four corners, then fix the ring to the paper with reusable adhesive putty at three or four points around its edge. Avoid drawing on a glossy or padded surface — the paper flexing under the pen is what lets the ring creep. If the ring still shifts on long patterns, pause every few rotations and press it back down without lifting the wheel.
